Coram Boy
Coram Boy, by Jamila Gavin, was an intellectually challenging way for my Year 8s to start their second year at Secondary School. It is a historical novel, meaning the students are able to access, but also criticize, deeper cultural knowledge. The novel deals with some extremely challenging concepts, such as slavery, racism, and child trafficking. It approaches these, however, in an age-appropriate way: for instance, the concept of child trafficking is there, but there are none of the nitty-gritty details so sadly present in reality.
